Announcements:

Examples of Scholarships Available Through OREA 2010-2011

Memorial Board  Our Memorial Board awards two $1,000 scholarships annually; one each to a grad in the field of Gerontology at OSU and PSU.

   Unit 1:  City of Portland

  • Children’s Atlases  35 furnished to each school in the Portland area.  5 or 6 schools a year.

  • Smart Program

  • Collect for Doernbacher

  • Two Scholarships a year for those entered into the teaching program.

Unit 2: Salem

  • SREA annual scholarships go to two future teachers who are in their last terms in the teacher training program.  This year each winner received $600 to go toward their college expenses.  Both recipients spoke at one of the SREA meetings. Contributed by Ruth Aydelott, Unit 2 President. 

  • Ruth Aydelott is chairman of the School House at the Oregon State Fair.  She is always looking for volunteers to help at fair time.

Unit 9:  Morrow-Umatilla

  • Pull tab collection for Ronald McDonald House

  • Stuffed animal project for Guardian Angels, St. Anthony ER

  • Heritage Station Museum tour guides

  • Shoe Souls project to help provide footwear to children in need

  • Partner with the ESD for helping clean science kits that are used in area classrooms

  • Teach “READY for Kindergarten”, sponsored by the ESD

  • Provide volunteers for the Pendleton Public Library to help with their campaign for library card sign-up

  • Volunteer in classrooms and/or mentor programs

  • Award one or two $750.00 scholarships to upper division college student majoring in education.  Funds are generated from our annual Christmas Bazaar and Raffle.

Unit 18:  Linn/Benton Counties

  • Donated funds for school supplies

  • Host an exchange student from OSU and invite community to attend. (last year student was from Afghanistan

  • Mid Columbia /The Dalles/Hood River-Unit 20 

Unit 20:  Mid-Columbia   Hood River , Wasco Sherman, Counties 

  • Collection of needed supplies for kid’s from Next Door, Inc. (broken homes, out on their own, etc.)

  • Meals on Wheels

  • Fire wood as needed

  • Scholarship of $750 to student in teacher program

  • Smart Program

Unit 21:  Union County

  • Santa Mall

  • Books for newborn babies at the hospital

  • Volunteer at schools

  • Volunteer at hospital

  • Back Pack helpers

  • Money to Back Pack Program

  • Food collection

King City-Unit 34

  • Monthly speakers on: poverty, genealogy, elder law

  • Made and sold Christmas swags for the scholarship fund

  • Items collected for the King City Rehabilitation Center

  • Collected eye glasses, walkers, canes, hearing aides for those in need

  • Worked at Loaves and Fishes

  • Provided workers and food for the Good Neighbor Center

  • Taught female inmates at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility to make quilts

  • two $500 scholarships

Yamhill County-Unit 37

  • Unit 37 gives a $1,000 award to a student in Yamhill County attending Linfield,  George Fox College , or Western Oregon University in Monmouth (WOU).  The funds may be used at the discretion of the student teacher—for supplies, clothes, gas, etc.  The recipient is a guest speaker at one of the Unit’s spring meetings.

OREA is interested in helping you start a new unit or renew one.  At the state level there are resources to reach out and support this effort. If you would like assistance, please contact me as soon as possible.  We have exciting new directions.
